The Hope Space Giving Project
Initiative Against Hunger
Due to the ever increasing need for food assistance for individuals and families in the most underserved communities in Chicago, we have decided to direct our efforts with The Hope Space Giving Project to help combat the issue.
According to a recent article by WBEZ, “the rate of food scarcity has roughly doubled compared to pre-pandemic times. And the picture is even worse when you look at who has been most severely affected: Black and Hispanic households with children...throughout the pandemic, there have been times when as many as 33% of Black families with children reported sometimes or often not having enough food to eat. As many as 27% of Hispanic households with children have reported the same.”
As a solution focused group, we feel the best way to offer help, is to pool our resources and donate funds to community groups that are working tirelessly to feed families in the most underserved and diverse areas in our city. So we will be collecting monetary donations that will be divided between two organizations:
The Love Fridge AND Peace Center of Rogers Park- Meal Gift Cards for the Unhoused

Their Mission:
The Love Fridge is a Chicago-based initiative created to nourish our communities through mutual aid by offering solutions to food scarcity and food waste. Powered by kindness, generosity, and most importantly, love, we firmly believe that feeding oneself is not a privilege, but a right.
With food insecurity at an all-time high, keeping our communities fed is now more important than ever. Our volunteers come from all over Chicago, working within their own neighborhoods to collaborate with like-minded partners to place community refrigerators across the city.
These refrigerators, painted by local artists to reflect the communities in which they live, provide neighbors the opportunity to donate food as well as take what they need, ensuring accessible food 24/7.
The Love Fridge is a mutual aid network that is truly dedicated to changing the way people think about giving and taking care of each other as well as providing stigma free access to food 24/7 for anyone who needs it.
“Mutual aid is not a form of charity, but a guiding principle for practicing reciprocal and collective care. Mutual aid networks provide a way to meet the basic needs of the community while allowing each other to contribute what we can to the common good. Put simply, we look out for one another in any way that we are able to.” ~The Love Fridge
The money donated to The Love Fridge through this round of The Giving Project will go towards cleaning supplies, materials to build fridge shelters, electricity bills, and food to fill fridges when they are empty.

Their Mission:
The Peace Center of Rogers Park (PCRP) educates and supports members of the community as they determine their own path of growth and development by providing a variety of programs and services for individuals and families in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago. These programs offer opportunities for participants to grow spiritually, academically, and professionally, while networking and increasing involvement with other neighborhood residents, program participants, and community partners.
PCRP is organized and run by The United Church of Rogers Park, which is a truly all-inclusive community that strongly believes:
"Black Lives Matter, Women’s rights are human rights, Love is Love, Immigrants make America Great, Hate has no home here, Climate Change is real (and something must be done about it)." ~UCRP
Although they have had to temporarily suspend many of their in person programs, they've still been working tirelessly to help those in need in Chicago's most diverse community. They've packed and distributed hygiene kits, done supply giveaways, handed out free meals/food through their food pantry and so much more!
One of their newest initiatives is to provide support to the unhoused members of the community, by handing out gift cards to healthier/accessible/affordable restaurants in the neighborhood. As many of them do not have regular access to a refrigerator to keep food fresh, much less a means with which to cook said food, the gift cards can provide a lifeline to freshly prepared nutritious meals throughout the week.
The money donated to PCRP through this round of The Giving Project will be used to purchase restaurant gift cards for the unhoused and those in need.
